1. Faded Pavement Markings

Southern Nevada’s extreme temperatures wreak havoc on road striping, lane dividers, and crosswalks. The intense heat quickly deteriorates paint, adhesives, and other materials, leaving many streets without clear indicators for lanes or pedestrian crossings. You might remember that awful section on the southern loop of the westbound traffic between the I-15 exit and Jones Road as a classic example. The lines were virtually invisible right where the lanes shifted over. That lack of visibility, coupled with high traffic volumes, no doubt increased the likelihood of collisions. Thankfully and gratefully, our public officials have dramatically improved and corrected that whole stretch of road. Today, it is nicely repaved and clearly marked.

2. Debris on Roadways

High winds and construction activities typically scatter debris across Las Vegas roads> Drivers encounter everything from nails and tools to rocks and litter. With the city hosting over 50 million visitors annually, in addition to its 2.5 million permanent residents, local roads see a higher volume of litter and debris than similarly sized cities. This creates yet another layer of risk for drivers.

3. Flood-Prone Low Areas

In a city that seldom sees rain, when it does happen, drivers are unprepared for the dangers that come with it. Water quickly pools in low-lying areas, leading to hydroplaning, reduced visibility, and difficulties with steering wheel control. Drivers unfamiliar with these conditions often find themselves overcompensating and in precarious situations.

4. Unpredictable Lane Narrowing

Las Vegas drivers are no strangers to roads that unexpectedly shrink down from multiple lanes to a single one. This, of course, creates sudden bottlenecks and dangerous situations. These “saw-toothed” roads, as they’re often described, lead to abrupt braking, erratic lane changes, and unnecessary congestion. Maryland Parkway at Citrus Avenue on the south side of town is a prime example of this phenomenon, but such roadways are scattered throughout the valley. Without proper signage or warnings, these suddenly narrowing lanes poses serious threats to roadway safety.

5. Constant Construction Zones

Besides being the “Entertainment Capital of the World,” locals are well aware that Las Vegas is also the “Construction Cone Zone Capital of the World.” From Formula 1 road repaving projects to major construction on interstates, the valley is riddled with construction zones. While necessary for growth and improvement, these zones create confusion, congestion, and heightened risks for drivers and pedestrians alike. Even well-established construction areas often remain hotspots for accidents.

6. Improperly Designed Curves

Las Vegas roads feature curves that are either flat or, worse, sloped away toward the downhill direction. Design flaws like these lead to lost traction, especially at higher speeds.

7. Obstructed Signage

Hidden stop signs and other critical ones are another hazard. These are often concealed behind overgrown trees or bushes. Drivers navigating neighborhood streets often find themselves startled by suddenly visible stop signs. These leads to abrupt stops or in worst cases, the running of stop signs. For an area already challenged by a high number of traffic violations, including intoxicated drivers, unclear signage exacerbates the problem.

8. Poor Road Conditions

There are areas of uneven pavement, potholes, and poorly patched roads across the metro area. These issues cause everything from bent rims and damaged tires to loss of vehicle control. Drivers attempting to avoid these hazards often make sudden, unpredictable maneuvers, which of course, increases the likelihood of collisions.

9. Median Cuts and Road Diversions

As the Las Vegas area continues to grow, new shopping centers, entertainment venues, and housing developments lead to frequent modifications in road designs. These changes result in unfamiliar driving patterns that leave residents and visitors alike confused and prone to accidents.
